Raising the Bar: Writ Lands $3.2M to Reimagine Writing for the AI Era

Interview

AlphaFund recently sat down with Writ co-founders Sarah Richards and Marcus Webb to discuss their $3.2 million seed round led by Accel, their vision for streamlining professional writing and editing, and their plans for the future.

AlphaFund: Thanks for joining us today. Can you start by giving our readers some background on yourselves and what inspired you to start Writ?

Sarah: Absolutely. Marcus and I first met while getting our MFAs in creative writing at the University of Michigan. We quickly bonded over our shared frustrations with the outdated tools and workflows for professional writers and editors. The writing process was tedious – constantly switching between different documents, spreadsheets for tracking edits and comments, endless email chains, etc. It was inefficient and made collaboration a nightmare.

Marcus: Yes, the fragmentation was really holding the writing process back. And we were far from alone in those frustrations. There are over 600,000 writers and editors in the U.S. workforce according to government data. But the software they relied on was really built for other use cases like word processing or basic text editing. There was a huge opportunity to build a modern, purpose-built platform tailored specifically for streamlining professional writing and editing workflows at scale.

AlphaFund: It’s definitely a big market that seems ripe for innovation. What was your specific approach to streamlining those inefficient workflows?

Sarah: Our core philosophy is that writing and editing are intrinsically collaborative processes that should happen transparently in a single, centralized platform. With Writ, writers can seamlessly collaborate with team members, editors, beta readers – anyone involved in creating and polishing that written content.

We’ve built robust version control, editing tools like in-line comments and suggestions, automatic backups of every revision, and more. Stakeholders get a real-time, transparent view into the writing process from concept to final draft. It eliminates all of the fragmentation of the old way of emailing documents back and forth.

Marcus: And what’s really exciting is how Writ integrates cutting-edge AI writing assistants and large language models into those collaborative workflows in a secure way. The AI can help with everything from grammar and style suggestions to generating entire drafts or sections based on an outline or prompt. It’s like having a hyper-intelligent, always-available writing partner.

AlphaFund: Integrating AI writing tools in a secure environment is definitely compelling. What are some of the key use cases or industries Writ is targeting?

Sarah: We’re seeing strong traction and interest across any field that involves professional, collaborative long-form writing and editing. That includes traditional book publishing houses, journalism and media companies, academic research institutions, enterprise marketing teams doing content creation, scriptwriting for film/TV, legal firms doing contract work, and more.

The $3.2 million seed round from Accel and other investors will allow us to rapidly expand our AI language model integrations and continue enhancing Writ’s workflow automation tools. We’re also investing in building out robust security, compliance, administrative controls and enterprise functionality.

Marcus: Ultimately our mission is to become the centralized operating system that powers the entire professional writing world. We want writers and editors to be able to seamlessly move between different projects and collaborate with anyone, anywhere in a secure environment with AI co-pilots aiding them every step of the way.

AlphaFund: That’s certainly an ambitious vision, but it sounds like you have the funding, capabilities and passion to potentially make it a reality. Is there anything else you’d like to add for our readers?

Sarah: Just that we’re still in the very early innings here. Writing and the written word are foundational to how we learn, communicate complex ideas, share knowledge, and drive society forward. But that creative process has become bogged down and fragmented. We’re on an important mission to reimagine writing for the modern era and unlock the creative potential of the world’s brilliant writers, editors, journalists and authors.

Marcus: Absolutely. The writing world is ripe for a massive re-platforming that enhances human creativity rather than replacing it entirely. With Writ, we’re showing that AI can be a powerful collaboration tool—not just a word processor. Stay tuned, because this is just the beginning.

Part 2: Common Questions About the Writing and Editing Industry

What is workflow automation for writing and editing?

Workflow automation uses specialized software and AI tools to streamline and optimize the entire professional writing and revision process. This includes using AI writing assistants that can help with grammar, style suggestions, content generation, and more. It also includes capabilities like version control, commenting, role-based permissions, approvals workflows, and other administrative features to facilitate seamless collaboration on documents.

How big is the professional writing market?

The professional writing and editing market is immense on a global scale. There are millions of full-time writers, editors, journalists, academics, content marketers, scriptwriters, authors, legal professionals, and others who write and edit as part of their careers. The U.S. writing and editing workforce alone is over 600,000 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What key pain points do writers & editors face today?

Some of the biggest challenges writers and editors deal with today are inefficient, outdated workflow processes. This often involves constantly sending documents back-and-forth over email, using disparate tools for writing, editing, commenting, and approvals. There is a major need for centralized, collaborative platforms built specifically for streamlining professional writing workflows at scale.

How can advanced AI language models assist writers?

Large AI language models that leverage machine learning and natural language processing can mimic many aspects of human writing capabilities. They can assist writers by generating original prose, suggesting revisions to grammar and style, automatically generating outlines or sections based on prompts, answering research queries, and more. When integrated seamlessly into intuitive writing platforms, advanced AI models can serve as powerful virtual writing partners.

What security & compliance capabilities are needed for enterprises?

As cloud-based writing and editing platforms gain adoption within larger enterprises and regulated industries, robust security and compliance safeguards become critical. This includes advanced access controls, granular user permissions, detailed revision tracking and audit logs, approval workflows, data encryption, PII protection, and third-party certifications like SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR and more.

With their $3.2 million seed round, Writ is well-positioned to execute on their ambitious vision of becoming the centralized operating system for professional writers and editors everywhere. By seamlessly blending advanced AI language models with intuitive workflow automation tools in a secure environment, Writ is showing how artificial intelligence can empower rather than replace human creativity and collaboration.

As Sarah Richards and Marcus Webb explained, the writing world is ripe for a massive re-platforming that unlocks the full potential of brilliant writers, journalists, academics and authors. While still in relatively early stages, Writ is at the forefront of that important transition. The creative process that has driven the sharing of knowledge and ideas throughout human history is getting an AI-powered upgrade for the modern era. It’s an exciting step forward worth watching closely.
